Projects in this theme respond to the urgent need for research-informed strategies, collaborations, and outreach to overcome these challenges, with particular emphasis on the consequences of wildland-urban interface fires, the blue economy and climate change with strong justice, economic, social, and environmental benefits. Cal Poly plays a crucial role in training the technological and scientific workforce. Yet, we also know that the skills and competencies required to both be successful in and to shape the future of technology are changing.

The Strategic Research Initiatives program funds innovative proposals that promise to transform Cal Poly and the surrounding community in California, with the underlying goals: Enhance academic and student success Create positive economic and social impacts Enrich personal wellbeing of faculty, students, staff and community of Central Coast Ensure financial success and sustainability Under the direction of Renee Reijo Pera, Vice President of Research and Economic Development, Cal Poly launched the Strategic Research Initiative program in Central Coast Place-Based Research Projects in this theme seek to create communities that are diverse and flourishing, while remaining respectful and cognizant of Northern Chumash sovereignty and amplifying the voices of diverse groups whose voices and experiences are too often missing from dominant conceptions of the Central Coast.

Community Health Projects in this theme seek to respond to health concerns that disproportionately affect marginalized or minoritized communities, including a lack of access to health care. He conducts qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies in understanding the psycho-social-cultural mechanisms of adjustment in Latino immigrant families with children who serve as translators and interpreters i. His research also focuses on identifying the processes that facilitate the psychological wellbeing of Latino gay men.

He teaches courses on abnormal psychology, basic counseling skills, intimate relationships, human sexuality, and couple's therapy. She is currently associated with an international and interdisciplinary collaborative research network to advance the study of lived religions and gender in relation to Hinduism and Islam. Anthony Ocampo, Ph. Ocampo is currently working on his second book, Brown and Gay in LA, which chronicles the lives of gay men of color from immigrant families.

A native Los Angeleno, Dr. Jocelyn A. Pacleb earned her Ph. She earned her B. Her current work examines the enlistment of non-U. Among her teaching and academic accomplishments, Dr. She has co-edited a collection of essays titled Reflections: Research Beyond Borders on conducting research abroad in a culturally and ethically sensitive manner. This interdisciplinary book sets out to reassess Western-based research practices and presents self-reflexive narratives on research experiences around the globe.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Mr. The processes of inquiry and discovery are fundamental to higher education. As faculty engage in their own research and creative activity they continually update their knowledge and skills and renew their classroom teaching. When students have the opportunity to participate in research and other forms of scholarship, critical and analytical thinking is enhanced, and their innate curiosity is piqued and their talents are cultivated.

As a polytechnic university, we bring a wide range of resources to the applied research arena, from exceptionally qualified faculty, to talented students and specialized facilities. Our faculty engage in a broad variety of sponsored projects in applied research and development, consulting, product testing, analytical testing, curriculum design and development, and community service, across all disciplinary areas.
