Qlll will hit the Dreamcast with all the single-player trials and multiplayer modes--namely Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag--of the PC original. It will keep many of the same level maps, as well as include several new arenas.

Up to four players can battle each other in split screen if they don't feel like going online for network play. But Internet deathmatching is Qlll's main draw, and the DC version will let up to 16 players duke it out online.

It'll be different lengths and colors depending on how good the connection is. It will automatically disregard games that are not going to give you optimal gameplay. At a minimum, PC users will have to download some type of patch. Technically, we're pretty sure we can do it.

As long as it's a good experience for both sides, we'll definitely put that feature in there. Qlll will support a variety of control configurations, including one that lets you use your joypad and keyboard in tandem, much like the mouse-and-keyboard setup PC Quake freaks are so fond of. But will you be able to use a mouse? The DC version will look at least as good as the PC original.

It'll pack new textures and support all the major effects, including curved surfaces, while running at a solid 30 frames per second. You'll even find special VMU display functions, such as messages that pop up during gameplay, a frag counter, an in-game compass and more. But what'll really set this version apart is its collection of characters and the novel, seemingly Pokemon-inspired way you'll open some of them.

You won't be able to open these guys by playing solo. The only way to get them is to go hunting on the Qlll servers. Hawkins said Sega and Raster will leak these character models one at a time on various servers or perhaps even during special E3 tournaments. Players who unlock the characters in the tourneys will then pass them on in regular games, and eventually the new characters will trickle down to all the servers. No one wants to see Sonic fragged.

Yeah, there are better single player first-person shooters out there, but If you have never played multiplayer online deathmatch, prepare for your whole world to change. In the transition from the PC to DC, they got almost all the big stuff right: the game looks incredible and moves smoothly, even in the splitscreen modes. All the superb weapon effects and detailed otherworldly levels have been retained, making Q3 the best-looking game in the genre-outdoing even its PS2 peers. Ingenious level designs including the new DC-exdusives make for battles that can always be strategic, but never boring.

The weapons, the characters, alternate play modes teams, tournament and capture the flag , the fully customizable controls, the number of options-- all excellent. The online play is really impressive for a 56K modem-a bit jumpy at times and you won't be using the lightning or rail gun really effectively, but otherwise one helluva ride. My one big problem is the four-player limit. This combined with the actual rocket launcher and Plasma Gun serve as the game's only highlights.

Sure it's fun to go around pummeling people with the Gauntlet but it's very hard to do. The shotgun doesn't have much of a feel to it and the grenade launcher is mediocre; you can't even use hand-grenades! With all this out of the way, you've got to keep in mind that Quake III Arena's intention is to be played online with actual opponents. In my experiences so far, I've found the Internet support to be great with a multitude of public servers.

Unfortunately, my 56k modem doesn't seem to cut it anymore; I've experienced lots of packet loss, high pings such is the case with many dial-up users and terminated connections. Though Quake III Arena out of the box is mediocre at best, I'm going to look at the big picture and tap into this game's potential and possible future.

If you consider Quake and Quake II's performance out of the box, it wasn't exactly up to par. Carmack wants this game to excel above all others and he'll ensure it reaches that level some day. Anyone who's spent time with Quake II online knows there are a wealth of modification developers that release their own takes on gameplay. The already mentioned Rocket Arena II was widely regarded as the best "mod" released for that game; Team Reaction, with renowned modification programmer Dave Wallin, has produced a variety of popular, award winning games including Jailbreak, Gloom and Qpong while Weapons Factory Software produced the acclaimed and widely accepted Weapons Factory mod.

Though the single-player game is far from substantial with some poorly designed maps, a lack of gameplay options and originality, average weapons and inadequate netcode, the good things will come to those who can wait. With a few modifications and patches, this will have a very long hard-drive life Graphics: For the most part, the graphics are phenomenal with unparalleled texturing and design.

There are some really nice artistic touches like lava pits, swinging crosses, gothic statues and architecture. Additionally, the player models look great with fluid animation and unique design. A few of the maps are boarder-line ugly, however, with shiny textures. While some of the voices are annoying, the announcer is great with excellent explosion and gunshot effects.

Enjoyment: Though the single-player game is over far too quickly and lacks any sort of depth, the real meat and potatoes comes from the online experience.

If your connection is good and you're not lagging, it's a very enjoyable game -- real opponents are much harder than bots! Locations contain boosts that give temporary immortality, invisibility, teleportation, or a "predator effect" that allows you to quickly deal with opponents.
